Ethan Suplee has spent much of the last three years documenting his weight loss and overall fitness journey: in addition to losing more than 200 pounds and managing to keep it off by overhauling his nutrition, he has also discovered a love of fitness. In a recent Instagram post, he showed off just how far he has come, flexing his biceps while shirtless in a pool.
The actor, best known for his roles in My Name Is Earl, American History X and Kevin Smith comedies like Mallrats and Chasing Amy, is also showing one of his surgery scars while he’s posing. Suplee underwent two major surgeries following his weight loss to remove excess skin, a process he described as “brutal” on his podcast American Glutton, but which he deemed necessary as his skin had stretched so far while he was overweight that it had lost the elasticity required to shrink back.
Suplee is often asked about his excess skin post-weight loss, and in the caption of this post he addresses some of the myths out there, saying that for some people, “there is no natural path for reducing skin… No type of diet, or cream, or fancy red light application that will get skin to grow smaller.”
While Suplee is proud of the incredible progress he has made and is eager to share his experiences with others, he is also open about the fact that he still struggles with self-image and body dysmorphia.
“It’s incredibly satisfying, but look,” he said in a 2021 interview. “The reality is that I have mental illness and I don’t look at myself and think, ‘God I look great.’ I see nothing but negative stuff every day and I try to convince myself.'”
