Searching for an affordable home internet plan? Maybe it’s time to try 5G—Straight Talk just opened its prepaid 5G home internet service, which leverages the Verizon network and qualifies for the FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Program discount.

Straight Talk Home Internet is an affordable, prepaid version of Verizon’s 5G home internet service. It utilizes Verizon’s network, offering speeds up to 100 Mbps on 5G. It doesn’t require a credit check, and it costs just $45 a month after purchasing a $90 router.

Now, $45 a month is pretty standard for 100 Mbps prepaid home internet. Companies like Xfinity offer very similar prepaid internet plans. But Straight Talk Home Internet is notable because it uses 5G—you can take the router on the go, and nobody needs to lay broadband cables around your home.

More importantly, Straight Talk Home Internet works with the FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Program. Low-income families who qualify for this program can get a $30 discount on their internet service, slashing Straight Talk Home Internet down to just $15 a month. (This discount increases to $75 a month if you live on tribal lands. Internet access is prohibitively expensive on tribal lands, hence the larger discount.)

You can enroll in the Affordable Connectivity Program at the FCC’s website. This program is means-tested based on income, though you automatically qualify if you (or a dependent) currently receives SNAP, Medicaid, the Pell Grant, or another government benefit.

While Straight Talk Home Internet isn’t perfect, it’s an interesting option for budget-minded families who don’t want to deal with broadband. To purchase Straight Talk Home Internet, follow the steps listed at Walmart’s website. The retailer will check that Verizon 5G networking is available in your area.
