NEW YORK — It hasn’t always been the steadiest season for Eduardo Escobar, but he’s producing when the Mets need it most.
Escobar hit a walk-off single and drove home all five runs in a 5-4 Mets win over the Marlins on Wednesday night at Citi Field. The win gave the Mets a one-game lead in the NL East, slicing their magic number to clinch the division to 6. They currently hold the divisional tiebreaker over the Braves by virtue of their 9-7 head-to-head record, meaning they only need to tie their rivals to win the NL East. That will remain true as long as the Mets win at least one of their three games in Atlanta this weekend.
Trailing for much of the game after Taijuan Walker allowed three runs in five-plus innings, the Mets cut the lead in half on an Escobar two-run homer in the seventh. An inning later, after Marlins reliever Tanner Scott walked the bases loaded, Escobar punched a two-run single through the right side of the infield to tie things.
In the 10th, with runners on first and second, Escobar hit his walk-off through the left side of the infield to bring the Mets pouring out of their dugout.
