When it comes to iconic teenage characters, Wednesday Addams falls somewhere between Daria Morgendorffer and Tina Belcher.
She’s sardonic, intelligent, and deeply loyal to her family of misfits. Her braided pigtails are unmatched. She is the lazy girl’s Halloween costume, and she’d probably be proud to carry that title, honestly.
Now, with the help of Tim Burton and Netflix, Wednesday Addams is coming to the small screen later this year.
Here’s everything we know about Wednesday.
It’s a YA series, and it’s coming to Netflix.
The eight-episode series is a coming-of-age story, according to Netflix.
“The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’s years as a student at Nevermore Academy,” Netflix said in a release.
We’ll see “Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago—all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.”
Tim Burton will direct.
Can you think of a better fit for a director? Because I can’t. The series is Burton’s first live-action show, as well as his TV directing debut, per Deadline.
If there’s anyone to fill the shoes of Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams to perfection in the 1991 film adaptation of the comic, it’s Jenna Ortega.
The 19-year-old has had a series of star-making roles in the past few years: She appeared in the critically acclaimed film The Fallout and the A24 horror flick X, as well as more mainstream titles including 2022’s Scream and Netflix’s You. With Wednesday, Ortega is sure to become a household name.
Christina Ricci will return too.
The OG Wednesday Addams, Christina Ricci, will be returning to familiar territory—but not as an older version of Wednesday, Deadline reports. She will appear in all eight episodes as an as-yet-unnamed character.
The supporting cast is star-studded.
Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones will star as Wednesday’s idiosyncratic parents, Gomez and Morticia Addams, respectively. Gwendoline Christie is also poised to make an appearance as Larissa Weems.
